Open wide for Jeffrey Morgan's Slush Pile #8!
Slayer - Christ Illusion: Special Edition (American) :: The grotty metal monster returns replete with a whole buncha new songs and videos that are guaranteed to keep your girlfriend's thick lips stretched to the limit.
The Details - Draw A Distance, Draw A Border (Parliament Of Trees) :: Nothing here you haven't heard before in the plaintive angst-rock department, but at least it's really well done.
Jens Lekman - Night Falls Over Kortedala (Secretly Canadian) :: Did guy towns like Dim Morridin widda bad hed code.
The Last Goodnight - Poison Kiss (Virgin) :: Is this the price we have to pay for George Michael?
Racoon - Another Day (An Other Label) :: "Someone's trying to kill me," they sing--and after one listen I can understand why.
Linda McRae - Carve It To The Heart (Black Hen) :: Don't let the cute cherub on the front cover fool ya 'cause Linda's slicin' up some of the blowziest country blooze music you'll hear in a tune's age. The wall of sound sonics are so thick you'll want to devour it with a fork--but use a spoon instead because you'll want to get every drop. Mmm mmm good!
Mos Generator - Songs For Future Gods (Small Stone) :: They're heavier than KISS, what else do you need to know? Bonus points for having a band logo that inverts the old classic Warner Bros. shield.
Badfinger - Badfinger & Wish You Were Here (Collectors' Choice) :: Here are two timely reminders why Badfinger was the second greatest pop band in the world, day after day. If you want them--and you'd damn well better--here they are, come and get them.
The Masons - Let You Down Easy (75orless) :: What an ambitious eclectic mish mosh of music styles. Listen carefully between the notes of this real life Masked Marauders and you'll hear just about everything including: Beatles, Stones, Mott, Bowie, Television, Velvets, Johnny Cash, Pere Ubu--everything but my favorite band, the Kitchen Sink.
Revolution Mother - Glory Bound (Cement Shoes) :: They're beefy, they're tattooed up the wazoo, and it sure sounds like they recorded this meaty slab of heavy growloholic thud rock from deep inside a freshly fractured skull.
Nushu - Nevermind Lullabye (self released) :: Primo pop princess Lisa Mychols is back with Hillary Burton in tow and they've both come up with an infectious new album that's easily as dynamically bubbly as Lisa's earlier work--in fact, they sound just like the early Who!
Protest Hill - The City Echoes Our Hearts (Latest Flame) :: Tracks two and three prove that RFK Heise can write catchy pop songs. Tracks one, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten and eleven prove that he inexplicably chooses not to.
Kate Maki - On High (Ow Om) :: Sparse but extremely brainy acoustic pickin' and playin' from a woman who knows how to write a good country folk song and get it across with a fragile but endearing voice. Inspirational lyric: "Is it worth its weight in scars? Are we better behind bars?"
